Container Painting

Shipping container painting improves appearance, protects the steel, and extends the usable life of a container, whether it is new, used, or part of a conversion project. Bosh Boxes provides professional container painting across the UK, using marine-grade coatings designed for outdoor use, regular handling, and long-term exposure.

Container painting is commonly used to match brand colours, refresh older units, blend containers into residential or rural settings, or finish conversion projects such as cafés, offices, and retail units.

RAL Colour System (Every Shade Covered)

All container painting is completed using the RAL colour system, which is the industry standard for marine-grade container coatings.

This ensures:

  • Consistent colour matching
  • No ambiguity over shades
  • Compatibility with marine paints

We can apply:

  • External painting
  • Internal painting
  • Full internal and external repaints

Optional extras include:

  • Stencilling or numbering
  • Colour-coded doors
  • Two-tone finishes

Important colour guidance:
Dark colours generally require fewer coats and offer better coverage on used containers. Lighter shades such as white or very pale greys usually require additional coats and may increase cost and lead time.

If heat build-up is a concern, particularly on refrigerated or occupied containers, we will recommend suitable colours and finishes.

Our Painting Process (Built to Last)

Container painting is not simply a cosmetic spray-over. The process and conditions matter.

1. Container Selection

We start by selecting a container suitable for painting, based on:

  • Size and condition
  • Intended use
  • Whether it is new or used

This avoids painting unsuitable donor units.

2. Surface Preparation

Containers are cleaned and prepared to remove loose debris and contamination.

On used containers, surface rust is not normally ground back to bare steel. Shipping containers are built from Corten steel, where surface rust forms a stable protective layer. Grinding this back does not significantly extend lifespan and adds unnecessary cost.

3. Paint Application Conditions

Marine-grade container paint performs best when applied under controlled conditions.

During painting:

  • Paint is heated to approximately 60°C to achieve correct viscosity
  • Application is carried out using professional spray systems
  • Even coverage is applied across panels, doors, and fittings

Heating the paint allows it to flow correctly, bond to the steel, and cure evenly, which improves durability and finish quality.

4. Curing & Quality Checks

Once applied, the container is allowed to cure fully before handling.

After curing, we carry out a quality check to confirm:

  • Even coverage
  • Correct colour
  • Door operation and seals

Only once checks are complete is delivery arranged.

Typical lead time:
Painting usually adds 2 to 8 weeks, depending on container condition, colour choice, and current demand. Specialist colours or busy periods can extend this slightly.

Basic vs Premium Paint Finishes

Standard Repaint

A standard repaint focuses on coverage and protection.

  • Paint is applied over existing surfaces
  • Door seals and locking gear are painted over
  • Ideal for storage containers where appearance matters but perfection is not critical

This is the most cost-effective option and is commonly used on refurbished containers.

Premium Repaint

A premium repaint focuses on cosmetic finish.

  • Door seals and locking rods are masked
  • Cleaner visual finish around moving parts
  • Recommended for one-trip containers and conversions

Premium repaints improve appearance but do not change structural performance.

Internal Container Painting

Internal repainting is less common but is sometimes requested for:

  • Conversion projects
  • Hygiene-sensitive uses
  • Visual improvement of older units

Internal painting can be completed in standard light finishes or darker colours to suit a specific design brief.

Why Paint a Shipping Container?

Container painting is commonly chosen to:

  • Match company branding or fleet colours
  • Improve appearance of used containers
  • Blend containers into residential or rural environments
  • Protect steel from long-term exposure
  • Finish container conversion projects professionally

Painting improves cosmetics and adds a layer of protection, but it does not make a container structurally stronger. Honest expectations are important.

Popular Add-Ons

Painting is often combined with:

  • Lockboxes and security hardware
  • Anti-condensation treatments such as Grafotherm
  • Ply lining and insulation
  • Windows, doors, and conversion fit-outs

Completing painting before these additions ensures a cleaner final finish.

Important Considerations Before Painting

  • Metallic and pearlescent colours are not available with marine-grade container paint
  • Exact colour matching cannot be guaranteed when repainting over existing colours
  • Light shades usually cost more due to additional coats
  • Painting will extend delivery lead times
  • Painting improves appearance and protection, not structural lifespan

We will always advise honestly if painting is or is not worthwhile for your intended use.
